An SD card is the most casually abused storage device most people own. It gets pulled out of a camera mid-write, formatted by a phone that did not ask nicely, dropped in a bag with keys, and filled to the last megabyte before anything gets backed up. So when the photos vanish, it is rarely because the card is dead. It is usually because a file table got scrambled, and the pictures are still sitting on the card exactly where they were.
Here is the part everybody gets wrong: the biggest threat to those photos is not the card failing. It is you putting it back in the camera “just to check”.
Every photo you shoot, every thumbnail the camera regenerates, every time a phone writes a new cache file — those all land in the free space where your deleted photos live. Eject the card, put it somewhere safe, and do the rest of this from a computer with a card reader.
Work out which kind of problem you have
These need different responses, so identify yours before you download anything.
Step one: try the free route first
Before spending money, plug the card into a reader and run a scan with something free. If your photos come back, you are done.
On Windows, Recuva takes two minutes to install and handles recently deleted files on a healthy card fine. On any platform, PhotoRec will carve JPEGs, HEICs, RAW files and video out of a card even when the file system is a total loss — the trade being that you lose all the original filenames and get a folder of f0021845.jpg to sort through.
For a holiday’s worth of photos, that trade is usually worth an evening. For 8,000 images from a wedding shoot, it is not.
Step two: when free is not enough
The paid tools earn their money in three specific places: reconstructing your original folder structure, handling camera RAW formats properly, and coping with a card whose file system is damaged rather than just missing entries.

Disk Drill is what I reach for with memory cards specifically, and the reason is RAW support. Its signature database covers Canon CR2 and CR3, Nikon NEF, Sony ARW, Fujifilm RAF and Apple ProRes properly — not “we detected a file” but genuinely reconstructed, openable images. If the number of photos is modest, EaseUS is the smarter first purchase decision, because it might not be a purchase at all. Two gigabytes of free recovery covers a few hundred JPEGs comfortably. Its exFAT handling — the file system on basically every SD card over 32 GB — is decent, though a step behind Disk Drill at rebuilding folder names.
The actual procedure
- Use a proper card reader, not the camera. Connecting the camera by USB puts the camera’s firmware in charge of what the computer can see. A direct reader gives the recovery software raw access to the card, which is what it needs.
- Write-protect the card if it has a switch. The little slider on a full-size SD card genuinely prevents writes. Slide it to Lock. MicroSD adapters have one too.
- Make an image of the card first. Disk Drill, Stellar and R-Studio all do byte-for-byte imaging. Scan the image file, not the card. If something goes wrong you still have the original untouched, and you can try a second tool on the same image.
- Run a quick scan. If the file system is only lightly damaged this finds everything in a minute or two, with names and folders intact. Do not skip straight to deep scan.
- Then run the deep scan. This reads every sector and matches file signatures. On a 128 GB card expect 30 to 90 minutes depending on the reader. A cheap USB 2.0 reader will triple the time — use a USB 3.0 one if you have it.
- Preview before you pay. Open five or six of the photos you actually care about. If they render properly, buy the licence. If they are grey rectangles, that data is gone and a different tool will not change it.
- Recover to your computer, never back to the card. Writing recovered files onto the source card overwrites the files you have not recovered yet. This is the mistake that turns a partial recovery into no recovery.
Before assuming the worst, try a different reader and a different USB port. Card readers fail far more often than cards do, and I have watched two people write off a card that a $9 replacement reader read perfectly. Also check Disk Management on Windows or Disk Utility on Mac — if the card appears there with a size but no letter or volume, the hardware is fine and the file system is the problem, which software can fix.
What about phone microSD cards?
Same process, one extra consideration. Android phones increasingly format cards as “internal storage”, which encrypts them to that specific handset. If you did that, a card reader will show an unreadable volume and no recovery tool will help, because the decryption key lives in the phone. Put the card back in the original phone and recover from there instead.
If the card was set up as portable storage — the default, and what most people have — it is just an exFAT or FAT32 volume and everything above applies.
Brands we have tested this on
Brand matters much less than people expect. A SanDisk Extreme and a no-name card from a marketplace both store data the same way, and both recover the same way. What differs is failure rate, not recoverability.
Stopping this from happening again
Two habits fix almost all of it. Format cards in the camera that uses them, not in Windows — the camera writes the cluster layout it expects, and mismatched formatting is behind a surprising share of “card is corrupted” errors. And retire cards on a schedule; flash memory wears out, and a card that has been through four years of shoots owes you nothing.
The third habit is the obvious one nobody does: offload after every session, not when the card fills up.
Questions people actually ask
Can I recover photos from an SD card that was formatted?
Usually yes, if it was a quick format. That only rewrites the index; the image data is untouched until something overwrites it. A full format on Windows 10 or later writes zeros across the card, and that is genuinely unrecoverable. Cameras almost always do a quick format.
How long do deleted photos stay on the card?
Indefinitely, as long as nothing writes to the card. There is no expiry timer. A card left in a drawer for three years will still have them. A card you kept shooting on for ten minutes may not.
Why did recovery find my photos but they will not open?
Part of the file was overwritten, or the write was interrupted before the file was complete. JPEGs sometimes open partially with the bottom half grey. Some tools, including Recoverit, can repair these to a degree.
Do I need to pay, or is free enough?
Free is enough if you can accept losing the original filenames and folder structure, which is what PhotoRec costs you. Paid tools buy you back the organisation and much better RAW format handling. Scan free first — you lose nothing by finding out.
My card asks to be formatted every time I plug it in. Should I?
No. That prompt means the file system header is damaged and Windows cannot read it. The photos are still there. Formatting is exactly the thing that would remove them. Scan it instead.
Can I recover video from a GoPro or drone card?
Yes, though it is harder than photos because action-camera video is heavily fragmented across the card. Disk Drill’s camera recovery mode is built for reconstructing exactly this, and it is the main reason it tops this particular list.
