UrRecover exists because of a bad afternoon involving a memory card, a wedding, and about four hours spent reading “best data recovery software” pages that all recommended the same product in the same order for reasons that became obvious once we checked the affiliate networks.
So we did it properly instead. We buy the software, we destroy drives on purpose, and we report what actually got the files back.
What we do
We test data recovery software against a fixed 4,000-file payload across six deliberate failure scenarios, verify recovered files by checksum rather than by eye, and publish the results whether or not they suit the products that pay us best. Our full methodology is public.
We also write the guides we wanted to find at the time — what to do first, what makes it worse, and when software is simply the wrong answer and you should stop and call a lab.
What we are not
We are not a data recovery service. We do not handle your drive, we cannot take your device, and we have no cleanroom. If your drive is clicking or physically damaged, you need a professional lab and no article on this site will substitute for one.
We are also not neutral about money, and pretending otherwise would be silly. We earn a commission when you buy software through our links. What we can tell you is that free tools are ranked on the same pages as paid ones and beat them where they deserve to, that commission rate is not a scoring input, and that our disclosure page spells out exactly how the arrangement works.
Editorial standards
- Every licence is bought at retail. We accept no free review copies.
- No vendor sees an article before publication or can request changes after it.
- No paid placement, ever. Position is earned on test results.
- Every article carries a visible last-updated date and we revisit rankings as products change.
- Corrections are made promptly and noted.
