USB sticks fail in a way that feels personal. One day it mounts, the next it is a 0-byte volume, or Windows greets you with “You need to format the disk in drive E: before you can use it.” The file you needed was on it, of course, and only on it.
The good news is that most flash drive failures are logical, not physical. The controller is fine, the NAND is fine, and the file system that indexes them has been scrambled. That is a software problem, and software fixes it.
The bad news is that flash drives are also the device people most often kill through impatience — by formatting when prompted, by running chkdsk, or by writing the recovery software onto the very drive they are recovering.
Do not click Format when Windows offers. Do not run chkdsk /f — it repairs the file system by discarding what it cannot understand, and what it cannot understand is your files. Do not save anything to the drive, including the recovery tool itself.
First, work out whether it is logical or physical
This decides everything that follows.
Index cleared, data intact. The most common and most recoverable case.

If it does not appear in any port on any machine, no software will help and you are looking at a chip-off recovery from a lab, which typically starts around $300.

Recuva for recently deleted files on a drive that still mounts. PhotoRec when the file system is unreadable — it ignores the file system entirely and carves files out by their byte signatures, which is precisely the situation a RAW flash drive presents. TestDisk, PhotoRec’s sibling, does something better still: it can rewrite a damaged partition table so the drive simply mounts again with everything intact. When TestDisk works it is the cleanest possible outcome, and it costs nothing.
The catch with PhotoRec is the one it always is — no filenames, no folders. A flat directory of f1289456.docx. For thirty files, fine. For three thousand, painful.

For a stick that has gone properly RAW, or one throwing I/O errors, Stellar’s more conservative approach — image first, skip bad sectors, log and continue — gives you a better shot than tools that just hammer away at failing NAND.
Do it in this order
- Stop using the drive and leave it plugged out. Yes, even to check one more time.
- Install the recovery tool on your computer’s internal drive. Not on the USB stick. This sounds obvious and it is the single most common way people destroy their own data.
- Plug into a rear USB port on a desktop, directly. Front panel ports and hubs introduce power and signal problems that look exactly like drive failure. This alone resolves a surprising number of “dead” drives.
- Image the drive before scanning it. If it is behaving erratically, take one clean copy and work from the copy. You get unlimited attempts instead of one.
- Quick scan first, deep scan second. Quick scan reads what is left of the file table and takes seconds. If your files appear with proper names, stop there.
- Preview the files that matter. Open them in the tool’s preview pane before buying anything. Rendering correctly means the data is intact. Grey boxes mean it is not, and no licence fixes that.
- Recover to a different disk. Always. Writing to the source drive overwrites what you have not recovered yet.
If a 1 TB drive cost £12 and now shows 0 bytes or corrupts everything past a certain point, it is almost certainly a fake — a small chip flashed to report a large capacity. Writing past the real size silently destroys earlier data. Recovery software can usually pull back whatever fell within the genuine capacity, and nothing at all beyond it. Test suspicious drives with H2testw or F3 before trusting them.
Why USB sticks fail so often
Flash memory has a finite number of write cycles, and the cheap TLC and QLC NAND in a £8 promotional stick has far fewer than the SSD in your laptop. Add no wear levelling worth the name, a controller chosen on price, and a physical connector that gets levered sideways in a pocket, and the failure rate is what it is.
Which is the real lesson here: a USB stick is a transport medium, not a storage medium. Anything that exists only on a flash drive is one pocket-snag away from being gone.
When to give up and call a lab
If the drive does not appear in Disk Management on any computer, the PCB or controller has failed and there is nothing for software to talk to. A lab can perform chip-off recovery — desoldering the NAND chip and reading it directly on specialist hardware. It works surprisingly often, including on snapped drives, and it costs a few hundred pounds or dollars.
That price is only worth paying for genuinely irreplaceable data. For a copy of files you have elsewhere, it is not.
Questions people actually ask
Can I recover files from a USB drive that asks to be formatted?
Yes, and you should scan it before formatting, not after. That message means the boot sector or file allocation table is damaged, not that the data is gone. Every tool on this page can read past it.
Will formatting the drive erase my chances?
A quick format leaves the data intact and recoverable. A full format on Windows 10 or later writes zeros across the whole drive, and that is genuinely final. Windows defaults to quick, but do not rely on that — just do not format at all until after you have recovered.
Is chkdsk safe to run first?
No. chkdsk /f repairs the file system by discarding structures it cannot reconcile, which frequently means orphaned files get dumped into found.000 as unnamed fragments — or deleted outright. Recover first, repair afterwards.
My drive is not detected at all. Any hope?
Not from software. Try every port on two different computers first, since ports and hubs fail more than people think. If it never appears in Disk Management, the controller is dead and only chip-off recovery at a lab will reach the data.
How much does professional USB recovery cost?
For logical damage a lab will often quote $100–$300. Chip-off on a physically broken drive typically runs $300–$800 depending on the controller and whether the data was encrypted. Reputable labs quote after diagnosis and charge nothing if they recover nothing.
Can I recover files deleted from a USB stick years ago?
If nothing was written to the drive since, quite possibly. If it has been in daily use, almost certainly not. Deleted data survives until it is overwritten, and normal use overwrites it steadily.
