An external drive that stops appearing is one of the few data-loss situations where the odds are genuinely in your favour. In our experience the actual cause is a dead cable or a starved USB port far more often than a dead drive — and even when it is the drive, the data usually survives whatever went wrong with the enclosure around it.
What kills the data is what people do next. Specifically: clicking “Initialize disk” when Windows offers, formatting when prompted, and running chkdsk /f on a volume that has already lost structure.
“You need to initialize a disk before Logical Disk Manager can access it” means Windows cannot read the partition table. Initialising writes a new, empty one. Your data is still on the platters, but you will have just thrown away the map to it. Cancel that dialog.
Rule out the boring causes first
Do these in order. Between them they resolve most cases, and they cost nothing.
- Swap the cable. USB cables fail constantly and they fail intermittently, which is worse. If you have another one, try it before anything else. This is the single most common fix.
- Use a rear port on a desktop. Front-panel ports and unpowered hubs often cannot deliver enough current for a spinning 3.5″ drive. A drive that spins up and immediately drops is nearly always a power problem, not a data one.
- Try a different computer. This separates a drive problem from a driver problem in one step.
- Listen to it. A healthy drive spins up with a faint whirr and a soft click as the heads park. Repeated clicking, beeping or a grinding noise means stop immediately — see the warning below.
- Open Disk Management. Press Win+X, choose Disk Management. On macOS, Disk Utility with “Show All Devices” enabled. If the drive appears here at all — even as “Unallocated”, “RAW” or “Not initialized” — the hardware is alive and this is a recoverable software problem.
- Check Device Manager for a driver issue. A yellow triangle on a USB Mass Storage Device entry means Windows, not the drive. Uninstall the device and unplug/replug to force a reinstall.
Those are mechanical symptoms — a failing head assembly, a seized spindle, or a head that has landed on the platter surface. Every additional second of power scrapes away more of the magnetic layer that holds your data. No software will help and running a scan makes the eventual lab recovery harder and more expensive. Unplug it, and get a quote from a cleanroom recovery service.

If the drive does not appear at all but you cannot hear anything obviously mechanical, the failure is often in the USB-to-SATA bridge board inside the enclosure rather than in the drive itself. That board is a cheap component and it dies far more often than the drive does.
Opening the enclosure and connecting the bare drive directly to a SATA port, or to a different USB-SATA adapter, brings a good number of “dead” externals straight back to life with all data intact. It voids the warranty, so weigh that against how much you want the data.
One caveat: some Western Digital and Seagate enclosures encrypt at the bridge, meaning the bare drive is unreadable outside its original enclosure. If you shuck one of those and get a RAW volume, put it back in the enclosure and work from there instead.

If the “external drive” is actually a NAS or a multi-drive enclosure that has dropped an array, this is the tool. The free option worth trying first
TestDisk deserves a specific mention here. When the problem is a lost or damaged partition table — “Unallocated”, “Not initialized” — TestDisk can scan for the old partition boundaries and write them back. When it works, the drive simply mounts again with every file where it was. That is a better outcome than any file-by-file recovery, and it costs nothing.
It is a text-mode tool and it looks alarming, but the default path through it is genuinely just: choose the disk, choose the partition table type, Analyse, Quick Search, Write. Take an image first if the drive is at all unwell.
Do this in the right order
- Cable, port, second computer. Five minutes, no risk, fixes a large share of cases.
- Check Disk Management. Determines whether this is a hardware or software problem.
- If it appears: image the drive. Especially if it is slow, stalling, or showing errors. One clean copy, then unlimited attempts on the copy.
- Try TestDisk on the image if the partition is missing. Rebuilding the partition beats recovering files individually.
- Otherwise run a recovery scan and preview before paying.
- Recover to a different drive. Never back onto the source.
- Only then repair the original. Once your data is safely elsewhere, format it, run chkdsk, do whatever you like. Not before.
Questions people actually ask
My external drive shows up in Disk Management but not in File Explorer. Why?
Usually one of two things: no drive letter assigned, or the volume is RAW. If Disk Management shows it as healthy with a file system, right-click and assign a letter. If it says RAW, the file system header is damaged — scan it with recovery software, do not format it.
Should I run chkdsk to fix it?
Not before recovering your data. chkdsk repairs the file system by discarding structures it cannot reconcile, and on a badly damaged volume that can mean your files end up as unnamed fragments in found.000 or gone entirely. Recover first, repair second.
The drive is clicking. Is there anything I can do myself?
No. Clicking means the head assembly is failing or has contacted the platter. Every second of power causes more physical damage. Freezer tricks and drop tests you may read about online destroy drives that a lab could otherwise have recovered. Power it down and get a quote.
How much does professional hard drive recovery cost?

Can I recover data from a drive Windows asked me to initialise, if I already clicked yes?
Often, yes. Initialising writes a fresh partition table but does not touch the data area. Recovery software scanning the whole disk will still find the file systems that are sitting there. Do not create or format a partition on top of it — that is the step that starts overwriting.
Why does my drive show the wrong capacity?
Usually the enclosure’s bridge chip. Older bridges cannot address beyond 2 TB and will report a wrapped size. Shucking the drive and connecting it directly by SATA usually reveals the true capacity and the intact data.
