Score: 3.7 out of 5. O&O DiskRecovery is the recovery product from a long-established German Windows utilities house, best known for O&O Defrag and O&O SafeErase. It is a serious tool from a serious vendor, with a narrower remit than the consumer names that dominate this category.
The same caveat as our AOMEI review applies. We have not yet run O&O DiskRecovery through our six-scenario protocol on our own drives. What follows is based on the vendor’s published specifications and our familiarity with the rest of their range, not on measured recovery rates. Everywhere else on this site the numbers are ours; here they are not, and we would rather flag that than blur it.
Three search algorithms
The headline feature is that DiskRecovery ships three distinct scanning algorithms rather than the usual quick-and-deep pair. In principle this matters: different loss scenarios respond to different approaches, and a tool that can attack the same volume three ways has more chances of reconstructing what a single algorithm misses.
In practice, we cannot tell you how much difference it makes until we have run it, and that is exactly the kind of claim we would want to measure before repeating it as fact.
Coverage is broad: hard drives, partitions, memory cards, USB drives and SSDs. Preview of supported file types after scanning is included, and the free trial exists specifically to check recoverability before you spend anything — which is the right way round.
The imaging problem
This is the most significant limitation and it deserves more attention than the spec sheet gives it.
Creating a byte-for-byte image before scanning is the single most protective thing you can do with a failing drive. Disk Drill includes imaging at no extra cost. Stellar treats imaging as the default path. O&O splits it out into a separate product, O&O DiskImage, which you buy separately.
For a healthy drive that is irrelevant. For a drive with bad sectors — which is precisely when you most need recovery software — it means either buying two products or scanning the failing drive directly, which is the thing you are trying to avoid. That single architectural decision is most of the gap between this and the tools we rank above it.
Windows only, and priced opaquely
No macOS build. If you have a mixed household, look at Disk Drill or EaseUS instead.
Pricing is not published as clearly as its competitors’, which we mention because in a category this saturated with upsells, transparent pricing is itself a signal. Check current pricing before committing, and use the trial first regardless.
Where O&O is genuinely the right answer
Two situations, both slightly off the main path.
Managed Windows environments. O&O’s tooling is common in businesses that standardise on their utilities, and a recovery product that fits an existing licensing and deployment arrangement has practical value that a scoring table does not capture.
The other end of the lifecycle. O&O SafeErase is the counterpart product, and it is the one we would point at when you are disposing of a drive rather than rescuing one. Our guide to wiping a drive before you sell it explains why a quick format is the most recoverable state a disk can be in — and therefore a poor disposal plan. Recovery and secure erasure are the same knowledge pointed in opposite directions, and O&O covers both ends.
Verdict
A credible Windows tool from a vendor with a long track record, held back in our ranking by the separate-imaging decision and the lack of Mac support. The free trial costs nothing and tells you quickly whether your files are reachable, so there is no reason not to check.
For most people, most of the time, start with Disk Drill on a healthy drive or Stellar on a sick one. We will update this score once O&O has been through the same six drives as the rest, and we will note the date when we do.
