After a format, finding file content is only half the job. The harder question is whether a recovery tool can restore the original filenames and folders. That depends on whether usable file-system metadata survived.
File-system recovery
A file-system scan looks for old NTFS, FAT, exFAT or other directory records. When those records remain coherent, results can include original names, dates and folder paths. Start here because it produces the easiest recovery set to review.
File carving
File carving ignores folders and searches raw space for recognizable headers and structures. It can find photos, documents and videos after directory records are gone, but filenames may become generic and fragmented files may be incomplete.
How to choose
- Run a quick or file-system scan first.
- Preview files inside their recovered folders.
- Switch to a deep signature scan only for missing categories.
- Recover carved results into folders by file type.
- Use dates, dimensions and embedded metadata to rebuild organization.
Do not write recovered files back to the formatted source.
Compare the scan results
A long list of generic files is not automatically better than a smaller result with intact folders. Prioritize verified, openable files and preserve metadata wherever possible.
