We fill test drives with a known set of 4,000 files — RAW photos, MP4 video, Office documents, a few hundred oddball formats — then delete, quick-format, full-format, corrupt the partition table and physically abuse them. Then we score each tool on how much came back intact and correctly named, not how much it claimed to find.
